Long-lasting, Full Coverage Holiday Makeup

There’s nothing like a holiday to make me realise I have a chronic makeup addiction. I have reached the point where I would rather pay for hold luggage for a 2 day mini-break than sort through all my makeup and choose one MEASLY plastic bag’s worth of 100ml-or-less liquids. At least when it’s all hidden away in the hold you can be in denial; safe in the knowledge that you have every shade of foundation and eyeshadow known to man and, if you want to wear a different perfume every night, you CAN.

However, when the security guy laughs out loud at you for trying to stuff enough liquids to fill a swimming pool into those little plastic bags, and then laughs even more when you get far too stressed at the thought of throwing away your liquid illuminator, you know it’s time to sort your life out.

I have just returned from a short break in Barcelona and, this time, things were different. Cabin luggage, one small makeup bag and – miraculously – one plastic bag of liquids. I have been lucky enough to go on some amazing holidays this summer and have been able to test out far too many combinations of products. Thankfully, I can finally say that I have found my perfect base for summer and it consists of just 4 products (and only 1 liquid!).

Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream (Combination to Oily Skin) in Medium + Bare Minerals Original Foundation SPF15 in Medium Beige

These are both old favourites which I rediscovered after clearing out my makeup collection. I’m not the biggest fan of the Garnier BB cream on its own because it can oxidise throughout the day and look very orange, but when coupled with the Bare Minerals foundation, it’s amazing. The consistency is watery and it therefore feels so light on the skin, but it carries enough coverage to even everything out and cover imperfections. I’ve been wearing shade Medium as it matches my body post-fake tan (it would be FAR too dark for me without the tan/in the winter) and applying with the Round Buffer Brush by Morphe (which you can buy in a set here).

The Bare Minerals foundation is the real star of the show, though. Without it, the BB cream would wear off throughout the day and oxidise, which is the last thing you want in the heat. The BM is a loose mineral powder which is buffed into the skin. It sets the BB cream in place whilst adding further coverage and a beautiful summery glow. Also, most importantly, it has the vital SPF 15 which has saved me from many a sunburnt nose.

A holiday face is obviously incomplete without a bit of bronze. My favourite for daytime wear is the Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel. They call this their “universal bronzer”, because it’s supposed to be a one-shade-suits-all job. Whilst I adore the product, I don’t agree that it’s universal. If you’re very pale, dark skinned or already very tanned, this probably won’t do the trick, but it’s great for light – medium toned skin for adding some warmth. I don’t apply it everywhere (contrary to the advice I received at the Chanel counter); only my forehead, cheekbones and jaw line. My favourite brush to apply this with is the Angled Buffer Brush by Morphe (linked above).

Last but not least, the GLOW. My obsession with The Balm’s Mary Lou Manizer highlighter has definitely not ceased, but I felt obliged to try something new and this is what I’ve fallen for – the Kiko Cosmetics Long-Lasting Eyeshadow no. 208. Yes, it’s an eyeshadow, but who says I can’t cover my entire face in it? It’s so pretty and gold and shimmery and SWIRLY, and definitely should not be applied over the entire face. Maybe just the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and cupid’s bow (my favourite place to highlight).

Let me know if you have any more summery recommendations. I could already do with another holiday to try them all out…
